Cleaning the orthodontic appliance

Dental floss with braces

Cleaning your orthodontic braces is crucial for maintaining oral health and preventing problems like cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath. Here are some tips for cleaning your orthodontic braces:

  1. Brush your teeth regularly: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably after meals, using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

  2. Floss: Flossing is essential for cleaning braces, as it can reach places a toothbrush can't. Floss daily and make sure to pass it between each tooth and the archwire, gliding gently up and down. If you have difficulty flossing with braces, you can use a floss threader to make the process easier.

  3. Use interdental brushes: Interdental brushes are small brushes with fine bristles that can help clean the spaces between your teeth and braces. Use them at least once a day, after meals.

  4. Use mouthwash: Mouthwash can help fight bacteria and plaque, which can build up on braces. Use a fluoride, alcohol-free mouthwash at least once a day.

  5. Avoid sticky and sugary foods: Sticky and sugary foods can get stuck in your braces and cause cavities and other problems. Avoid foods like gum, candy, caramel, soda, and sweets in general.

  6. Make regular dental visits: Make regular dental visits to assess your oral health and ensure your braces are being properly cleaned. Your dentist can provide guidance on how to improve your hygiene and prevent oral problems.

Three steps to clean your orthodontic appliance

  1. Brush your teeth and braces: Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for at least 2 minutes, including your back teeth and tongue. Then, brush your braces, brushing over, under, and between the wires and brackets in gentle, circular motions.

  2. Floss: Use dental floss to clean the spaces between your teeth and braces, gently moving it back and forth between each tooth and the archwire. Floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.

  3. Use mouthwash: Use a fluoride-based, alcohol-free mouthwash to help prevent plaque and bad breath. Swish for 30 seconds, avoiding swallowing. Use mouthwash at least once a day, after brushing and flossing.

These three steps can help maintain oral health and prevent problems like cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath while wearing braces.
